There’s a new round of tumult in the celebrity magazine world.
Alexis Chiu, the celeb-friendly writer who resigned as a senior writer at Time Inc.’s People last week, is heading to Bauer Publishing’s In Touch in a very senior job.
Bauer yesterday confirmed the defection, telling Media Ink that Dan Wakeford, the current editor-in-chief of Life & Style, is now going to also become editor-in-chief of Bauer’s larger circulation In Touch title.
Bauer Publications late yesterday confirmed that Chiu is indeed the new In Touch executive editor.
Still not clear is the fate of Deborah Baer, who is an executive editor at In Touch. She had been the acting editor ever since former Editor-In-Chief Michelle Lee left for Hollywood.com in January. Lee’s job atop the masthead was technically never filled.
Life & Style is among the few publications in the hard-hit celebrity category that has been posting year-over-year gains in newsstand sales.
Baer could not be reached, but sources say she is worried that the end is near for her at Bauer.
While Chiu wrote the recent People cover story crowning Beyoncé as the “World’s Most Beautiful Woman,” she is taking on a bigger management challenge — which is why Wakeford is going to be working with her.
In a piece of celebrity irony, it was In Touch that triggered the bust-up of Sandra Bullock and her husband, motorcycle builder Jesse James, when it published a story in March 2010 detailing a fling James had with tattoo artist Michelle “ Bombshell” McGee.
The couple divorced later that year.
Chiu was the writer at People who wrote the Bullock cover story telling her side of the break-up.
Calls to Chiu’s former phone at People yielded a message saying that she has left the company and to contact her on her cell phone.
She had not returned a call by presstime.
Sebastian Raatz, a Bauer executive vice president who has, at times, clashed with some of the editors, confirmed the arrival of Chiu and the promotion of Wakeford. “We are pleased to announce Dan and Alexis’ new role.”
Chiu was said to be vacationing in Mexico in between jobs and won’t take up the new post for another week and a half.
Hot in Cleveland
David Carey, president of Hearst Magazines, speaking at an Adweek Next Tech conference yesterday, said that the rise of the digital entrepreneur has upended forever the way traditional media giants do business.
“We have to meet the entrepreneur head on,” said Carey. “It used to be if you created an ink on paper challenger, it would take a lot of time and a lot of money. If you create a digital challenger it takes a shorter period of time and not a lot of money. And you don’t have to be based in a shiny tower in New York City, you could be based in Cleveland and compete.
“Our competition is not Time Warner across the street or Condé Nast,” he said. “Our competition is the people who set out every day to bring down the big battleships.”
Carey said in the past, there were three revenue streams that editors and publishers had to worry about. Today, he said, “there are probably nine or 10.”
He said that mobile devices now account for 16 percent of the page views for Hearst magazines, up from only 3 percent a year ago. He expects that number to rise to at least 32 percent of the Web traffic in the next year.
On the subject of tablets, Carey said Hearst is “trying to train consumers in the early stages of this” to pay for digital subscriptions.
The company’s focus so far in that realm has been “selling incremental paid subscriptions,” he said.
Carey noted that Hearst has sold more than 600,000 paid subscriptions via tablet devices.
Jannot jumps
The high-level departures from Swedish-owned Bonnier Corp. continue to pick up steam.
Mark Jannot, who was editorial director of the Bonnier Technology Group, which includes Popular Science, Popular Photography and several other titles, is gonig to be the new Chief Content Officer for Reader's Digest enthusiast brands, which includes Taste of Home and The Family Handyman.
La shake-up
La Nación, the second-largest daily newspaper in Argentina, formally took control of ImpreMedia, parent of El Diario/La Prensa in New York and La Opinión in LA and began shaking things up.
CEO Monica Lozano seems to have ceded much of the power to new COO Francisco Seghezzo, who moved into the corporate suite in the Brooklyn offices on April 30.

Amar’e Stoudemire’s temper tantrum may have come after the final buzzer Monday night, but it still drew a T.
But it wasn’t a technical, it was T-shirt designed by Crosstown New York, available for sale within hours of his meltdown.
Poking fun at Stoudemire, who is likely to miss the rest of the Knicks’ series with the Heat after he punched the case to a fire extinguisher, the shirt features Amare’s name with the ‘r’ replaced by a fire extinguisher.
It is available at crosstownny.com.

MIAMI — The Knicks need to heed and paraphrase the mantra Frank Galvin would repeat to himself in “The Verdict,” in the tense moments of that movie when you almost believed Paul Newman wouldn’t have the happy ending written for him.
“There are no other cases. This is the case,” Galvin, the brilliant, troubled, alcoholic lawyer said to himself, his eyes closed, his fist tapping his head. “There are no other cases. This is the case.”
It wasn’t a perfect case for Galvin. He was fighting James Mason and his fancy white-shoe firm, the overwhelming favorites.
Galvin won anyway. It was Newman. It was Hollywood.
Maybe what the Knicks need is a screenwriter. Or maybe they simply can embrace the possibilities that lay before them starting today, when they renew their longtime rivalry with the Heat and try to channel some of the heat and the heartbreak their forebears brought unto this city years ago.
“We have a keen sense of what we have to do to win this series,” Amar’e Stoudemire said yesterday. “But we also know that our goal is to win 16 more games.”
Are the Knicks an absurd long shot to do that? Of course they are. But the more you look at who the Knicks are as a team right now, and what they may be in the years to come, it makes you wonder if maybe Frank Galvin shouldn’t be giving the pregame pep talk.
There are no other seasons. THIS is the season.
“Enjoy the moment, seize the moment,” interim coach Mike Woodson said, echoing the message he has sent his team. “Because you may not ever get there again.”
For the Knicks that is an especially salient point. The Big Three aren’t going anywhere. Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler — under the weather yesterday with flu-like symptoms — will be the franchise foundation for at least three more years. But beyond that core, it is hard to imagine the Knicks being able to replicate what has become a solid supporting corps.
Forgetting Jeremy Lin for a second — whom the Knicks almost surely will move heaven and earth to resign in the offseason, because of the marketing windfall just uttering his name still brings, even in his injury exile — the Knicks will have some serious realities staring them in the face once this season ends.
It will be impossible to keep both J.R. Smith and Steve Novak, for instance, assuming neither player has an epiphany in the offseason and decides to stay with the Knicks either for the love of the game or the proximity to Broadway and Carnegie Hall and Radio City. In a lot of ways, the Lin-Novak-Smith trifecta was as brilliant a parlay as any NBA executive pulled off this year, and for that alone Glen Grunwald deserves to keep his job.
It may well be a fleeting triumph. It is hard to imagine the Knicks being quite as good at the start of next year as they are at the end of this one. And yes: All this year yielded was a seventh seed and a perilous postseason path. But it also may provide the Knicks with as golden an opportunity as they will ever have to make a serious push.
It would have been nice to finish with a higher seed, have a better regular season, set themselves up with a more comfortable place. But at some point, the Knicks still would have had to beat the Heat (or the Bulls, or the Celtics)four out of seven. They just have to do it earlier.
Can they?
Well, we have seen stretches when the full capabilities of this team have been on display, the second half of the Celtics game last week being the best example. They have one of the NBA’s premier defensive players in Chandler. And in Anthony they have a player who will draw key whistles when the Knicks need them most, and who showed in the last month why he was always considered an elite closer in Denver.
It’s why we can even have this conversation. Will the Knicks beat the Heat? You probably wouldn’t want to go to Vegas with that pick. Can they? It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start chanting to yourself in order to talk yourself into it. There are, after all, no other seasons.
This is the season.

Ally Financial could sustain losses of between $400 million and $1.25 billion in the event of a bankruptcy filing by its troubled Residential Capital mortgage unit, the government-owned auto lender said in a securities filing yesterday.
ResCap is “actively considering” a bankruptcy filing, which could cause Ally to incur significant charges, substantial litigation and possible losses on loans to the mortgage unit, according to the filing.
During an earnings conference call on Thursday, Ally CEO Michael Carpenter said ResCap was considering a range of options from staying the course to bankruptcy. Sources have told Reuters that bankruptcy was an option for ResCap, possibly as early as mid-May.
Ally is 73.8 percent owned by the US Treasury after a series of bailouts.

The rumors are true. Justin Verlander is mortal.
Hyperbole was given the night off when the reigning American League MVP and Cy Young winner was manhandled for a season-high five runs (four earned), on the way to a no-decision in the Tigers’ 7-6 loss at Yankee Stadium last night.
Verlander allowed his first two home runs of the season, tying a season-low with six innings pitched and a season-high of seven hits allowed.
“Obviously, it could have been a lot better,” said Verlander, 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in four career starts at the new Yankee Stadium. “Our team goes out and gives us six runs. You’ve got to make that work.”
The unusual trouble started early. Verlander allowed a first-inning double to Curtis Granderson and and RBI single to Alex Rodriguez, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead and more offense than many would imagine against the 29-year-old. Rodriguez struck again in the fourth inning, blasting a full-count, 97-mph fastball into right field to cut the Tigers lead to 3-2. It was the first home run allowed by Verlander this season.
The Yankees potent lineup was just part of the right-hander’s problems on a frigid night in The Bronx.
YANKEES BOX SCORE
“It was tough to feel the ball, but that’s the way it is on any cold night,” said Verlander, who had a season-low four strikeouts. “You’ve got to get used to that, especially when your home park is in Detroit.
“It’s tough in weather like this. It would take me half the inning to get loose, pretty much every inning.”
Verlander allowed runs in four of the six innings he pitched, giving up a two-run home run to catcher Russell Martin in the fifth inning, which gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead.
Verlander said the fastball was “pretty close” to where he wanted it to be, but Martin was able to line it just over the fence in right-center field.
“That really was the turning point when he hit that home run,” Verlander said. “Pretty good pitch. I would take my chances 99 times out of 100 with that pitch, but tonight it didn’t work in my favor.”
On a night without his best stuff, Verlander’s defense didn’t make things any easier. After Verlander surrendered a two-out double to Nick Swisher in the sixth inning, Raul Ibanez followed with a liner to left field.
Tigers outfielder Don Kelly froze and was charged with an error as the ball grazed his glove and rolled towards the fence. As Swisher rounded third, eventually cutting the Tigers lead to 6-5, Verlander walked off the mound with both hands clutching his head in disbelief.
It was hard to believe. Six runs were not enough for a win with Verlander starting.
